With three weeks of new data, ESPN’s FPI (Football Power Index) is slowly weaning itself off numbers from last year and inching towards what this year’s teams bring to the table — Florida State’s previous data has it still ranked as the No. 42 team in the country but now projects the Seminoles to finish with a 4-8 record, giving the team just a 21% chance of managing to secure bowl eligibility.

The journey to bucking that projection starts on Saturday when FSU takes on the Cal Golden Bears at 7 p.m. in Tallahassee. Florida State is still considered a 2.5-point favorite over the new ACC member, despite an offense that still is trying to find its footing entering into Week 4.

A situationally-centered practice on Wednesday saw the Seminoles’ defense shine while their offensive struggles continued — from Jordan Silversmith:

The defense clearly won a day focused on the situational moments of a game, such as third down and the red zone, as Adam Fuller’s group looks to build on a solid but not incredible performance last week against Memphis.

“I felt our defense had one of their better practices… I just felt their energy and approach,” head coach Mike Norvell said after practice, lauding their enthusiasm. “Guys were extremely competitive. I liked what they did, and they were doing it with good communication. You felt their presence in how they practiced today.”

Conversely, an ineffective offense struggled to create any momentum or identity, rotating between poor execution and being overmatched by the defense. The wide receivers took a step backward with dropped passes and a lack of separation, with the struggles amplified as the offense focused their attack through the air, and Norvell did not mince words assessing their performance — both directly to his pass-catchers throughout the morning and after discussing with the media.

“Still some things to clean up offensively…some dropped balls, some missed throws, and some missed opportunities. I thought some guys continued to push and elevate themselves. You feel the sense of competition of guys trying to seize the moment.”

To start the day, the offense worked to the edge of Ryan Fitzgerald’s range, a 61-yard field goal, during the opening two-minute drill that never got off the ground. In the middle 11-on-11 period, the defense recorded consistent stops as the secondary kept everything in front of them and attacked the ball. The red-zone offense sputtered and played like the group that kicked more field goals than touchdowns to start the season.

Norvell keeps saying that the main disconnect is that what FSU is showing at practice doesn’t equate to its output during games — for the offense, at least as far as Wednesday goes, let’s hope that remains the case.

Soccer

No. 2 Florida State soccer is set to begin ACC play today, facing off against Syracuse (6-3-1) in Tallahassee:

Florida State faces Syracuse in back-to-back seasons for the first time in ten years and will host the Orange for only the second time since 2014. FSU leads the series 6-0-1 with three consecutive victories dating back to 2016. Last year’s matchup at Syracuse required two second half goals to put the Seminoles over the Orange including a 84th minute game-winning goal by Onyi Echegini.

The Seminoles continue to extend and break program records on their impressive run dating back to last season. Florida State has scored in 40 straight games and holds a 29-game unbeaten streak, both of which are program records. FSU has recorded five shutouts in the opening six games and have conceded just two goals in the past 10 games.

The reigning national champions concluded non-conference play unbeaten for a fifth consecutive season. Last time out, FSU claimed a 3-0 victory at Florida to mark a seventh consecutive victory over its in-state rival. Taylor Huff opened the scoring with her sixth goal in six games before Wrianna Hudson and Kameron Simmonds scored in the second half to put the game to rest.

FSU has scored 24 goals in non-conference play, the most goals scored in that stretch since 2015 while conceding just one goal in non-conference play for the first time since 2018.

The Seminoles sent six players representing three nations to the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Marianyela Jiménez and Venezuela picked up its first-ever point in the competition with a 0-0 draw against South Korea while Brazil and the United States qualified into the knockout round. Both nations needed extra time in their Round of 16 matches as Lara Dantas and Brazil defeated Cameroon in extra time while Jordynn Dudley scored the game-winning goal for the U.S. to defeat Mexico 3-2.

Dudley began the incredible comeback victory for the United States in the quarterfinal match against Germany with a 90+8 minute goal to put the Americans within one before equalizing the next minute later at 2-2. The U.S. won 3-1 on penalties as Brazil fell to North Korea by one goal. The United States will face North Korea on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to clinch a spot in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Final.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. and general admission is free. The first 200 fans will receive a free green koozie upon entry to celebrate our mental health awareness match. The 7 p.m. game will be available to stream on ACC Network Extra. Live video and stats will be available at Seminoles.com.

Florida State volleyball seniors Taylor Head and Audrey Koenig were both named to the AVCA Division I Player of the Year Watch List:

Florida State is one of four ACC schools (Florida State, Louisville, Pitt, Stanford) to have multiple players on the list.

A Third Team All-American at Arkansas last season, Head has stepped in and been a great asset for the Seminoles so far in 2024. Head has recorded 86 kills which is third on the team, but has been just impressive on the defensive end as she is tied with Koenig with 76 digs this season and holds a .975 reception percentage with just four errors on 162 attempts. Head has also recorded 18 blocks this season. Head has come on strong the last three matches as she has recorded 10 or more kills against Florida Atlantic, UCF and Florida.

The reigning ACC Co-Player of the Year has been nothing short of spectaculary for the Noles through nine matches this season. Koenig has recorded 98 kills in eight matches for FSU has recorded 10 or more kills in her last six matches. Koenig has also contributed 76 digs and holds a .966 serve reception percentage for the Noles. Koenig crossed a milestone against Auburn on Sept. 8 as she became just the sixth player in school history to surpass 1,000 career kills in the rally scoring era.

The inaugural list includes 36 players from 21 schools, and the names will be revealed in groups of 12 over three days—from Wednesday., Sept. 18 to Friday, Sept. 20.

The Watch List will be narrowed down in November, and then the names of the finalists will be released before the AVCA Convention. The 2024 AVCA Player of the Year will be announced on Friday, Dec. 20, in Louisville, KY, during the AVCA Convention.

FSU will return to action when they take on Alabama on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. First serve is set for 3 p.m. and can be seen live on SECN+.
